Nine times out of ten no hot water is a part, not the whole unit, and it is worth finding that out before anyone quotes you three and a half grand on a replacement. There are four things that kill hot water far more often than a dead tank does, and every one of them is a fraction of the cost of a new system.
The element is the first. On an electric storage unit a failed element means no heat at all while the tank sits there perfectly serviceable. Common, cheap and quick. The thermostat is the second, and water that is lukewarm, or scalding, or that runs out much faster than it used to usually points here rather than at the tank.
The third is the tempering valve. It is mandatory on bathroom outlets and it is a genuine consumable. When it fails you get cold water at the tap even though the tank is full of hot, and people replace entire systems over it. The fourth is the pressure relief valve, and if yours is dribbling constantly you are dumping hot water down the drain and paying for it.

There is one symptom worth acting on straight away rather than waiting.
